When you’re starting a business, it can feel like you’re holding onto a lot of tiger tails all at once.
I’m here to tell you why letting go of the website tiger is not a good idea. It’s about search engine optimization.
Sure, a Facebook, Twitter, or an Instagram page may sound like an easy solution that you can build yourself in no time at all, but there are several reasons why you need your own business website as well.
1. So your business is Google-able
Having a website increases your Google page ranking. It also pulls a lot of content from your business’s website onto the Google Business page. By the way, did you know that you can claim a Google Business Page so when people Google your business all of your contact details come up, including the location, the hours of operation, the website, and more?
Yes, your Facebook page, or other social media pages will come up too, but your website will always come first.
2. It’s more professional
There are many ways to build a website. I am personally a champion of WordPress-based websites. Half of all websites that are run on content management systems (i.e. website builders) are run on WordPress. The New Yorker, CNN, and Beyoncé use WordPress. Be like Beyoncé.
Also, as a customer, I’d rather go to a website (especially a mobile-friendly website) than a Facebook, Twitter or Instagram page.
3. You control the content on your business website
Much of the content that Google displays when you type in your business’ name comes from your website. The better organized your website is, more information that comes up on the search engine result page. Think of it like a restaurant menu. You want your customer to be able to order something off a nice menu, right? That’s why it’s important to build a good website that has clear pages that Google can read accurately.
Furthermore, you decide what goes where on a website. And people can browse your website at their leisure. On social media accounts, you are governed by their rules and their algorithms. They decide what your audience sees, because, in actual fact, it’s their audience, not yours.
So there you have it. A few reasons why your business needs a website. Feel free to ask me any questions in the comments or on my business Facebook page, OK Digital Content.
